Seismologist

Unleash your potential as a seismologist: an exciting career path with endless possibilities

About

A seismologist is a scientist who specialises in the study of earthquakes and the propagation of seismic waves through the Earth. They study the mechanics of earthquakes, the effects of earthquakes on buildings as well as other structures, the nature of seismic waves and their interactions with the Earth's subsurface.

Seismologists may work in a variety of settings including government agencies, research institutions, universities and consulting firms. Their work is important for understanding the risks and impacts of earthquakes as well as for developing strategies to mitigate the damage caused by earthquakes.

Their work involves collecting and analysing data from seismic instruments such as seismometers and using this data to study the properties of the Earth's subsurface. They may also conduct field studies to gather additional data and to investigate the effects of earthquakes on buildings along with other structures.
